It’s a rather interesting period for Indian wear. While on one hand, designers are making great strides in reviving traditional textiles and ancient craftsmanship; on the other, traditional silhouettes are constantly being reinvented with a contemporary twist. Saris have made a huge comeback, and this new variation has won our favour: the ruffled sari. Au courant, fun and theatrical—what’s not to love?
Their key feature is their versatility. From ruffled borders and pallus to blouse sleeves and lehenga saris, a hint of this retro trend can surely elevate your game. Monotone or two-toned ruffled saris are the easiest way to maximise this look. Experiment with the blouse though. Anushree Reddy, for instance, adds embellishments and sheer panels to amp it up. Floral, striped and solid-coloured ruffled saris are the hero of Arpita Mehta‘s latest collection too. Ridhi Mehra and Mahima Mahajan have churned out winners too in bold colours and subtle prints. This allows the ruffles to take centre stage without clashing with the print. If you’re on the lookout for a dreamy, fairytale vibe, Sonaakshi Raaj’s pastel creations will do your bidding. As dramatic ruffles already give your outfit standout flair, keep the styling subtle by opting for elegant diamond studs or dangler earrings to top it off.
From Shilpa Shetty Kundra to Alia Bhatt, Bollywood’s leading ladies are already championing this style. If you’re new to the trend, take inspiration from Deepika Padukone who took the ruffled saree for a test drive in a white Anamika Khanna number, paired with a ruffled blouse.
