How celebrity brides are impacting dressing for the big day

There’s no denying that celebrity brides greatly impact what real brides say yes to for their own nuptials. Such is the power of Bollywood’s fashion choices, especially in India. Alia Bhatt’s recent bridal wardrobe broke the Internet (as expected); but not just because it was yet another A-list celebrity wedding. It was Bhatt’s wardrobe choices that won her favour — for starters, an ivory and gold Sabyasachi number instead of the usual bridal red. The actor also skipped a heavy-duty lehenga and said ‘I do’ to a sari instead.

What does Bhatt’s bridal garb mean for upcoming summer weddings? We predict a departure from what’s expected to what the bride feels her most authentic self in — be it by way of silhouettes, colors or detailing. The sari and free-flowing veil combo, of course, is bound to enjoy more of a center stage now too.

Not only did Bhatt wear one, but so did Katrina Kaif. Her Victorian gown-inspired sari was an ode to her mother’s British heritage, and a winning choice for a pre-wedding celebration. Mindful bridal choices will only continue to become dominant. Not unlike the newly minted Mrs. Kapoor’s mehendi lehenga from Manish Malhotra which was upcycled using archival patches from both the designer’s atelier and the bride’s personal collection.

Bhatt isn’t the only one to cause conversation with her wedding day looks. Remember Anushka Sharma in her blush pink Sabyasachi lehenga which became all the rage, ensuring pastel hues found a permanent fixture on the mood board of so many brides?

Apart from Bhatt’s home wedding to Ranbir Kapoor, there was also Shibani Dandekar and Farhan Akhtar who tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at their holiday house. Dandekar made a case for brides who want to skip the bells and whistles for their special day and went with a red lace mermaid lehenga and corset blouse — her soft waves under the veil being a common factor with fellow bride Bhatt. Do we spot a new go-to wedding day hairdo in the making?

Personalization is another norm du jour, further solidified in a bride’s psyche by bride whisperer Sabyasachi and his legion of celebrity brides —  examples include Sanskrit quote ‘Sada Saubhagyavati Bhava’ on the dupatta of Deepika Padukone’s wedding outfit, ‘Aayushmati Bhava’ on Mouni Roy’s veil, Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ kaliras customised with elements from the couple’s love story, and Sonam Kapoor Ahuja’s mangalsutra which features the duo’s zodiac sign.

Be it the kind of embroidery on the outfits, the colours chosen, the aesthetic of the decor or the jewellery; celebrity brides set the tone for the looks we are likely to see more of in the wedding seasons to come. Yes, there is aspirational value attached to their wardrobes, but a woman’s wedding is also that one time she can go all out to curate the wardrobe of her dreams, and that includes cues from the star who just tied the knot!
