Change is the only proverbial constant, and fashion has evolved rapidly to accommodate for it in these extraordinary times. FDCI’s India Couture Week 2020 too adapted to a time where physical events are impossible. The result? A wholly digital showcase, dependant on innovation and fashion films, for the very first time in Indian fashion history. The line-up included Couture Week regulars from Manish Malhotra and Gaurav Gupta to Rahul Mishra and Anju Modi.
We decode the collections of three A+CO designers — who adapted couture for our screens… decided sparks of joy in these unprecedented times.
Manish Malhotra
‘Ruhaaniyat – a celebration called life’ made for a fitting finale to the India Couture Week 2020. An ode to the legacy of Indian craftsmanship through the ages, it paid homage to the exuberance of Punjab, and the delicacy of Mughal and Urdu artistry through bridal wear comprising kalidar kurtas, khada dupattas, ghararas and salwars for women, and jamas, angrakhas and heavy shawls for men. 
Pastel shades and earthy hues dominated the collection, with rich gold and silver zari embellishment. Luxe handmade fabrics were another highlight of Malhotra’s extravaganza, aptly donned by his muse Janhvi Kapoor.

Gaurav Gupta
The collection called ‘Name is Love’ not only celebrated Gupta’s couture legacy, but also revelled in diversity in love, body types and inclusivity. The designer updated his iconic architectural waves with three-dimensional floral applique and delicate pearl and sequin embroidery on lehengas, gowns and concept saris tailored from shimmering, sheer fabrics in sparkling emerald, midnight blue, muted grey, and vivid cerise and berry tones. 
The collection also introduced Bordeaux suits for men in luxe velvet, featuring Gupta’s fluid yet structured elements, as well as fifty dazzling jewellery pieces.

Kunal Rawal
Mumbai’s Asiatic Library formed the perfect backdrop to Rawal’s Hide & Seek’, a collection which consisted of a delightful yet synergised fusion of everything the designer is known and lauded for — his signature cream monotone looks, pastel kurtas with minimal flora-inspired prints, as well as bold, jewel-toned V-block prints. 
Rawal’s signature functionality shined through his deconstructed sherwanis and handy separates, which were layered and matched with each other to create cool looks, in a way that only he can.
