Gaurav Gupta on the Avant-Garde Bride

Ever since he launched his label in 2005, Gaurav Gupta has become synonymous with an edgy, new-age reimagination of Indian wear. Not one to play by the rules, Gupta is well-loved for taking a conventional Indian garment and giving it an unconventional twist. He works very closely with lines and the motion of fabric. Embroideries in three dimensions, volume play and extempore draping make up his signature look.

As he prepares to come to London for the Aashni + Co Wedding Show, we caught him in an exclusive interview.

How would you describe the Gaurav Gupta bride?

A Gaurav Gupta bride is someone different, who loves a statement piece with standout details. She prefers exciting options for her sangeet and other wedding functions. Basically this bride is well-travelled, slightly more aware of the world of fashion and likes hints of Indian garments of saris and lehengas with western sensibilities, so that the future and primitive can merge together.

How can she achieve the right balance between edge and elegance?

The bride needs to be eager and should look around to try out more than a few clothes. She should avoid following the mob but ought to look for designs that are flattering on her. Most importantly, she should not overkill it with too many contrasting colours. The elegance could be the design detail of the drape, instead of something loud.

How has the Indian bride evolved according to you?

The Indian bride is more open to offbeat looks now. For instance, she doesn’t shy away from wearing a ball gown for her cocktail or reception in place of the conventional lehenga. Our modern take on the sari has also found many takers over the past few years.

You are known for your avant-garde creations? Which wedding functions are they best for?

Our sari gowns, lehengas, and our slightly more Indian versions of the gown are best suited for the sangeet and reception.

Which are the biggest bridal trends for 2017? Which trends are passe?

Soft pastel colours, and newer silhouettes with lesser embroidery are the two key trends. Softer colours give one a classic look and are definitely here to stay. Loud embroidery on loud colours, and anything that leads to an overkill should be avoided.
