Gaurang4
Gaurang Shah’s passion for Indian textile and weaving heritage, and his deep knowledge of the range of techniques and styles that different regions offer is unparalleled. Taking forward India’s centuries-old tradition of hand-weaving with a high degree of creativity and aesthetic finesse is what makes his creations unique. A recurring favourite at the A+CO Wedding Show, the designer will be back this year as well.

“I am very excited to be coming back to the wedding show. This year, I will be bringing my handcrafted textiles with more intricate craftsmanship for the contemporary bride. The silhouettes and weaving technique remain traditional, but we have added new textures, colours and cross border influences to it,” says Gaurang.

How would you describe the Gaurang bride?
The Gaurang bride is the one who embraces her roots with a touch of her own personality. She is understated but fierce and timeless.
You are well known for your jamdani, kalamkari, patola and kanjeevaram weaves. Which of these is most pain-staking to create?
All the weaves take anywhere between three months to two years depending upon their intricacy. For instance, the tie-dye process for patan Patola takes 6-8 months while the weaving on the loom takes about 30-60 days. It’s the other way for a jamdani. Preparing the yarns for jamdani takes a few weeks, but weaving it takes almost a year. I like to play with all the weaves to create a synergy between them in one ensemble.

How can brides think beyond conventional wedding wear for their pheras?
Saris are timeless, They are my favourite choice for the big day. Lehengas came in much later in the mainstream Indian bridal scenario. The older generations always wore saris. They can be draped in different ways for individualistic looks. New-age brides ought to experiment with drapes, textiles and textures to make it your own!

What are must-haves in a bridal trousseau according to you?
Saris are a must-have. It can be worn for a host of occasions all through your married life. Classics are fail-safe trousseau choices. This way, you won’t need to replenish your wardrobe with every changing trend.
